[Waiting on Wednesday] R Is for Rebel by J. Anderson Coats

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Breaking the Spine that spotlights eagerly anticipated upcoming releases.

Malley has led the constables on a merry chase across her once-peaceful country. With her parents in prison for their part in a failed resistance movement, the government wants to send her to a national school—but they’ll have to capture her first.

And capture her they do. Malley is carted off be reformed as a proper subject of the conquering empire, reeducated, and made suitable for domestic service. That’s the government’s plan, anyway.

But Malley will not go down without a fight. She’s determined to rally her fellow students to form a rebellion of their own. The government can lock these girls up in reform school. Whether it can break them is another matter entirely...

I'm not quite sure what to make of this one. It's a plot that I would find more fitting in the YA demographic, but Goodreads, at least, claims that this is written as a MG novel (and the lovely cover certain corroborates that fact!). The description tells of dire circumstances in an oppressive dystopian world, and I'm very curious to see how seriously the book takes it subject matter. R is for Rebel seems to be a story of--you guessed it!--rebellion against an oppressive regime, and that's a plot that could go to very dark places very easily, to the point that not taking it there might feel inauthentic and disappointing. And honestly, I really hope that the story does "go there", and that when it does, it does it well.

So, yeah. I'm super curious about this one. It has the potential to be an awesome new favorite, and that's always something to get excited about!
