[First Paragraph] Kitten in the Candy Corn by Ben M. Baglio

"Well, what do you think?" Mandy Hope demanded. She held up a cardboard cat mask. It was painted black and had sharp ears. Its long white whiskers were made from pipe cleaners. "It's taken me ages to stick the whiskers on. I'll bear a black sweatshirt top and leggings as well, and Gran's making me a belt with a tail."

Mandy's best friend, James Hunter, looked up from his piece of buttered toast. He squinted in the bright morning sun that was slatning through the Hopes' kitchen window. "It's great," he said, impressed. "You'll make my costume look really boring."

First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros is a weekly book blog meme hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea in which participants share the first paragraph or two of a book they're planning to read soon!

I'm not gonna lie; I decided to include two paragraphs this week because, honestly, the first one is kind of boring. And, yeah, the second doesn't really make it any more interesting. Mandy, the protagonist of the Animal Ark series, is creating a Halloween costume for herself, which fits for today, but... I don't know, it's not the kind of thing that would make me desperate to read on. (I enjoy the Animal Ark series, of course, as it's quite cute and quaint, so I will be reading on... but not because of anything particularly captivating about the opening.)

What about you? Does this opening make you want to read the rest of the book? If not, how would you improve it? Let me know in the comments below, and tune in next Tuesday for another book's first paragraph!
