[Book Review] Sunny The Yellow Fairy (Rainbow Fairies, #3) by Daisy Meadows

Fairyland is home to seven colorful sisters. Together, they are the Rainbow Fairies! They keep Fairyland dazzling and bright. But when evil Jack Frost sends them far away, the sisters are in big trouble. If they don't return soon, Fairyland is doomed to be gray forever!

A trail of sparkly yellow dust lands Rachel and Kirsty in a very sticky situation! Could Sunny the Yellow Fairy be at the bottom of it?

Sunny the Yellow Fairy, also published as Saffron the Yellow Fairy, is the third book of the Rainbow Magic: Rainbow Fairies series by Daisy Meadows. While exploring Rainspell Island with their families, Kirsty and Rachel come across an apiary run by an elderly woman. There, they stumble across Sunny, one of the fairies they've been looking for! But when they try to get her back to her sisters, Ruby and Amber, they find themselves in a confrontation with Jack Frost's dreaded goblins.

It's a solid addition to the series, continuing the story at a reasonable pace with just enough action to hold its audience's interest. I'm happy to see the villains receive some actual screentime (pagetime?) in this one, though they're certainly not particularly intimidating or competent. Hopefully Meadows can raise the stakes in the next few books to give the plot a little more kick.

My only actual complaint is that the bees operate purely on fictional tropes, with their behavior bearing little resemblance to actual bees. It's not something a child will notice, but it bugs me a bit.

At this point, I'm certainly intending to finish off Rainbow Fairies, and I'm planning on giving the next Rainbow Magic series, Weather Fairies, a try, as well. I'd recommend the Rainbow Fairies series to those children easing into chapter books; the stories are quite simplistic and very short (less than seventy pages). Any fairy-obsessed child--fans of the Disney Fairies franchise, for example--should certainly be entertained, even if his or her parent/guardian isn't particularly enthralled.
