Chu's Day is a cute book. The illustrations are adorable. Pandas are adorable. The pun of the main character's name is adorable. Pretty much every aspect of the book is freakin' adorable.
But there's not really much else to it.
What Chu's Day boils down to is a story that builds and builds and builds until Chu goes achoo... and I really don't give a shit. Maybe it's a symptom of being outside the target audience, but I expect more from the author of Coraline than a story that's essentially "Is this panda gonna sneeze? You bet this panda's gonna sneeze! Look, the panda sneezed! Wasn't that funny?"
Like, yeah. Sure. It's a panda sneezing. His sneezes are apparently as destructive as tornadoes or hurricanes or some shit. That's cool, I guess. It doesn't make any sense, but, uh... It's definitely cute!
I don't know. I feel like you could just watch that video of the mother panda being scared by her baby's sneeze, and it'd be the tl;dr version of this book with just as much emotional payout. Maybe more.
So you know what? Here's that video of the baby panda sneezing, and if you're craving more "pandas sneezing" humor when it's done, Chu's Day awaits you. As for me, I'm going to give Gaiman's next Chu book, Chu's First Day of School a try... but if it's more of the same, that'll be it for me and Chu. Alas.
