What the hell is this?
This is an overall dump of my thoughts during my first time viewing of From's opening episode, Long Day's Journey into Night.
And now for my notes.
I wasn't expecting both the mother and daughter to die. More importantly, though, this sheriff or whatever is unhinged. Are we doing "men are the real monsters"? Because it feels like we gotta be, right? He's crazy.
What is this accent? They both have a weird thing they're doing with their Rs, and when I Google it, Google just claims it's a "standard North American accent", soooo? Bullshit?
You're scared of buzzards? How have you even survived this long? (Oh, it's crows? Even less scary.)
Oh, and his son has gone and joined some kind of a commune where the sheriff's not allowed. Big surprise! I'm sure we'll find out that these people are fucked in some way, too, but I'd join up with some culty hippies if I were stuck having to deal with this violent weirdo, too.
I don't like this "new arrival"/audience surrogate family. They're fucking annoying.
So what would happen if the entire town got together and decided to try leaving as a unit? How many of these creatures could there possibly be? I mean, apparently one was enough to take out a woman and her child, but you've got a town of like fifty people. Lure one of the creatures in and then rip it to shreds? You've got more than enough people to do some damage, and, like... what are you living for anyway? To be trapped here forever? Can't go outside after dark? Never eat sugar again? No movies, podcasts? No travel, no friends, no unnatural colors? You can catch my ass dying in those woods, if y'all won't help me...
I can't stand the way these parents are coddling this awful little boy. They literally scold the teenage sister whenever she interacts with him (telling him stories, mostly) and encourage him to go back to his fucking iPad.
Yeah, these people sound like they don't actually speak English. I think the mom is actually Colombian, maybe, but what's everyone else's excuse? Y'all pronounce things weirdly...
Why is everyone so fucking unfriendly to new people? They didn't fucking do anything to you? What the fuck? If I were new to town and having to deal with these fuckers, I'd be helping the damn creatures.
Yeah, I don't want to deal with newbies. This sucks. I get that they're trying to show us how the town is inescapable, but this could've been a quick tell (and then maybe prove it to us later) instead of a super fucking annoying show.
Also, what the fuck do you mean "go ahead and get the strip." The sheriff is going to pop their tires to force them to stop? There's something very wrong with this man. (TVTropes is describing him as a "compassionate individual," and, uh, what show are y'all watching?)
Did he just DELIBERATELY CRASH THAT RV WITH AN ENTIRE FAMILY INSIDE? This sheriff isn't "compassionate," he's a monster. What the fuck? The little boy is IMPALED and the wife isn't responding. That better not have been the sheriff who ran them off the road. WHO FUCKING RAN THEM OFF THE ROAD. I swear to fucking god—
Okay, it was some weirdo. But, uh, what makes you guys so sure that anyone new who's showing up isn't also a monster? If they're shape-shifters, literally everyone in town could be a monster except for you. Meanwhile, this awful dad isn't concerned like at all when he daughter says his son is bleeding and has something sticking out of his leg. I really hate this family.
And now who's this fucker in the back of the car that ran the RV off the road? Is he very high?
Do you have keys to those cuffs? You can't cuff him to the car when you know there's going to be monsters running amuck within two hours, asshole!? (It's probably not a good sign that I can't stand any of these characters thus far.)
Apparently this was created by a lot of the same people who made Lost. That's... not a ringing endorsement.
I wonder if the little boy is gonna die. I'm kinda hoping so. Might make the parents interesting, and the boy fucking sucks, so I'll be happy if we don't have to deal with him anymore after this.
Well, this girl is fucking bad vibes. I wouldn't let her give me any fucking "water" or "medicine." I'm not looking to be poisoned, jfc.
Is the little boy already dead, because nobody seems like they're at all trying to help him, lmao. Oh, okay, he's still alive but they're running out of time. And they're going to risk their only doctor's life trying to save him by giving her a little talisman rock thing to try to protect the RV. But how's that supposed to fucking work if they killed that mom and daughter just because the daughter opened the window? The RV doesn't even have windows anymore. And if the talismans work in spite of the RV being all ripped up, why aren't they making more talismans? Mass-produce them and carry them through the woods until you're out!
I told you she was going to kill him! That's why they implied he was high during the crash—so we'd be more forgiving toward this crazy bitch for whatever the fuck she's up to.
Wait, what? What did that line mean? "Ethan's the one stuck in the RV." She's got a bad concussion and doesn't know what's going on? (I went back and relistened. Who the fuck is Thomas? Another—already dead—kid?)
OMFG, they left the strips on the road and stranded themselves from safety with minutes to spare, if that.
Honestly this stupid cliffhanger is probably going to work on me, because what do you mean you seriously think these things can't/won't get into the RV??? The windows are all broken!? You're looking directly at them through the remaining windows? They know you're there, what's going to keep them out!?
