At the summer fairy, a merry-go-round whisks Rachel and Kirsty away to a magical world. Could Heather the Violet Fairy have something to do with it?
On the last day of the Rainspell Island vacation, Kirsty and Rachel know that time is running out to find Heather the Violet Fairy. Of course, since the book is called Heather the Violet Fairy, you can assured that they do indeed find her. But she's in trouble. She's trapped in the art painted on the merry-go-round, and Kirsty and Rachel will have to use the last of their magical gifts to help free her.
Unlike the previous books, the rescue is all wrapped up within the first thirty pages of the story. The rest of it focuses on the important stuff: fighting Jack Frost, the villain whose on-screen appearance I've long been waiting for. He finally attacks now that the girls are back together, and he isn't quite as easily defeated as his minions. But he is still very easy to defeat.
Now, the way he's ultimately defeated is... kinda creepy, honestly. Highlight for spoilers: They imprison him long enough to make an escape to Fairyland, but they have second thoughts when he starts to melt on Rainspell Island. If he doesn't survive, neither will winter, and that'll change life as they know it forever. This realization introduces a really interesting note of moral ambiguity that I didn't expect Meadows to touch... and then it ramps up into full creep mode when their solution is to imprison him in a freakin' snowglobe so that they can safely return him to Fairyland and preserve the seasons. It's, uh... It's weird. I mean, it all works out, and Jack Frost agrees to turn over a new leaf in exchange for his freedom, but... kinda creepy and not at all the ending I was expecting.
Anyway, everyone gets their inevitable happy ending, and while an advertisement in the back of the book states that Kirsty and Rachel return for the Weather Fairies series, the ending offers no clues as to how that series will continue. Obviously, Rainspell Island won't be a factor any more... but I don't know what else will. I'm definitely going to give Weather Fairies a try, in any case. After that, I make no promises.
